A message from Chief Brian E. Stewart

The Scituate Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency for the Town of Scituate, Massachusetts. Our roster includes thirty Full-Time Officers, three Permanent Intermittent officers, nine Summer Special Officers and seven civilian employees. Our patrol area includes the mainland of Scituate, as well as the Humarock portion of town, which is only accessible through the neighboring town of Marshfield.

The department also offers a wide range of services beyond the patrol functions. Our D.A.R.E. program is one of the first in southeastern Massachusetts, and with the support of the Scituate Rotary has been educating our youth about making good choices and the dangers of drugs and destructive behaviors since 1989.  It is taught at the sixth grade, eighth grade and tenth grade levels. Another of our police and school partnerships is the Safety program. Elementary school children receive presentations on various safety topics of a timely nature. Given the return of the Greenbush Line to the MBTA’s Commuter Rail system, we have officers trained to present the Operation Lifesaver program on train safety.  We also provide assistance to students on a variety of law enforcement topics for various classes at the high school and have helped students from the  ‘School To Career’ class explore the world of Law Enforcement through time spent at the station and direct exposure to various components of the Criminal Justice System.

The department participates in area drug awareness and safety fairs, public events, and various parades in the local area. Station tours are conducted for groups interested in seeing where we work and how this department functions.  We join forces with the Scituate Recreation Department for such offerings as babysitter course, the R.A.D. programs and presentations for the various recreation summer camps. We can also provide crime prevention information to help you stay safer and reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of crime.

Our Traffic Division works diligently to make our streets safer for all who use them.  Our Traffic Enforcement Officer is actively involved, as a member of the Traffic Rules and Regulations Committee, in providing a law enforcement perspective to town’s regulating bodies as they address various traffic related issues.

The Detective Division is involved in investigations of a wide variety of crimes, both locally, and as part of broader based law enforcement community.  Their cooperation and involvement with other agencies on the regional, state, and federal level has led to successful resolution of a number of notable cases.

As you can see, we strive to be a proactive force in this community, with the vision of helping to improve the quality of life for our residents and visitors through partnerships with groups and individuals within the Scituate area. We hope that through the information here that you get a better understanding of the services we provide, and take a moment to share your thoughts with us.
